• IS 162 Cell Phone Policy

    SCHOOL-BASED POLICY FOR USE OF CELL PHONES, COMPUTING DEVICES, AND PORTABLE MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT ON SCHOOL PROPERTY.

    1. The use of cell phones, computing devices, and portable music and entertainment systems at school is subject to the conditions below.
    1. Cell phones and portable music and entertainment systems may not be turned on or used during the administration of any school quiz, test, or examination. 
    2. Computing devices may not be turned on or used during the administration of any school quiz, test or examination, except where such use has been explicitly authorized by the school or is contained in an Individualized Education Program or Section 504 Accommodation Plan
    3. Cell phones, computing devices, and portable music and entertainment systems may not be turned on or used during school fire drills or other emergency preparedness exercises.
    4. Cell phones, computing devices, and portable music and entertainment systems may not be used in locker rooms or bathrooms.
    5. Students who use cell phones, computing devices, and/or portable music and entertainment systems in violation of any provision of the DOE’s Discipline Code, the school’s policy, Chancellor’s regulation A-413, and/or the DOE’s Internet Acceptable Use and Safety Policy (“IAUSP”) will be subject to discipline in accordance with the guidance interventions and disciplinary responses set forth in the Discipline Code.

    Cell phones policy as set forth below:

    During the school day:

      • Cell phones may not be turned on or used while on school property.
    • Cell phones are to be stored in the YONDR pouch provided to the students during first period. Students will put the pouch in the storage location in the classroom. 
    • Any students that do not place their cell phone in the Yondr pouch will have their cell phone confiscated. A parent or guardian must come up to the school to retrieve the phone..

     

    Computing devices policy as set forth below:

    During the school day:

    • Computing systems may not be turned on or used while on school property.
    • Computing systems are to be stored in the student’s backpack while on school property.  

    Portable music and entertainment systems policy as set forth below: 

     During the school day:

    • Portable music devices and entertainment systems may not be turned on or used while on school property.
    • Portable music devices and entertainment systems are to be stored in the student's backpack while on school property.  

    Confiscation and return of electronic items

    • Any confiscated item will be returned following a parent conference.
    • Revocation of privilege to bring item to school. 

    In order to continue to enforce this policy, keep distractions out of classrooms, and your child’s property safe, we need the support of parents and cooperation of students.  If a child needs to contact a parent during the day, they have access to phones in the main office, guidance counselor’s office, dean’s office, or assistant principal’s office.
